Sound System Culture featuring Channel One

Ένα από τα πιο δραστήρια  Sound Systems της Αθήνας, το Origins, πιστό στο πάθος του για την Roots/Reggae μουσική συνεχίζει την επιτυχημένη μηνιαία σειρά από events η οποία έχει σκοπό να προωθήσει την κουλτούρα των Sound Systems με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο. Όπως είχαμε περιγράψει και στο Sound System Culture vol.7 , ο Systematic έχει κατασκευάσει ένα πανίσχυρο ηχοσύστημα ικανό να στηρίξει τα πιο δυνατά ονόματα της σκηνής. Απόδειξη αυτού η πρόσκληση του δίδυμου Channel One, ενός εκ των δημοφιλέστερων Sound System παγκοσμίως.

Ότι και να πούμε για τους Channel One θα είναι λίγο. Με 40 χρόνια ενεργής ασταμάτητης δράσης και αμέτρητες ώρες στα dancefloors, τα show που προσφέρουν είναι μια μουσική εμπειρία που όλοι οι λάτρεις της Dub μουσικής θα πρέπει να ζήσουν.

To όνομα των Channel One επιλέχτηκε σαν φόρος τιμής στην ομώνυμη Τζαμαϊκανή δισκογραφική εταιρία, η οποία επηρέασε αρκετά τον ήχο τους στα πρώτα βήματα. Η φιλοσοφία των Mikey Dread και Ras Kayleb περιγράφει την reggae ως ένα μέσο που φέρνει τους ανθρώπους πιο κοντά και αυτό ακριβώς ήταν που τους ώθησε  να περιοδεύσουν με το ηχοσύστημα σε διάφορα πανεπιστήμια και κοινωνικά κέντρα της χώρας, διαδίδοντας τη μουσική και την κουλτούρα της reggae στη νεολαία.

Το 2009 συμμετείχαν στην εθνική περιοδεία Dub to Dubstep Tour και το 2011 στην περιοδεία Dub to Jungle Tour, όπου παρουσίασαν μπροστά σε χιλιάδες κόσμο τη μουσική τους. Έχουν περιοδεύσει με τους βετεράνους Twinkle Brothers, έχουν εμφανιστεί σε Ευρώπη, Αυστραλία, Νέα Ζηλανδία, Τουρκία, Ισραήλ, Αμερική, Ινδία, Ιαπωνία και έχουν συνεχή παρουσία στο καρναβάλι του Notting Hill τα τελευταία 30 χρόνια.

Έχουν στο ενεργητικό τους αναρίθμητες αναμετρήσεις με τα μεγαλύτερα ηχοσυστήματα και το 2010 κερδίζουν το Red Bull Sound Clash αντιμέτωποι με τους Metalheadz, Skream, Benga και Souljazz. Το αναγνωρίσιμο πλέον χειροποίητο ηχοσύστημά τους, παρέχει ποιοτικό, με γεμάτα μπάσα ήχο και αποτελεί το τέλειο μέσο για τις μουσικές τους επιλογές που περιλαμβάνουν ότι καλύτερο από την κλασσική reggae, σπάνια βινύλια και ακυκλοφόρητα dancefloor killers με τα οποία ξεσηκώνουν τους χιλιάδες θαυμαστές τους.

Στο mini festival που διοργανώνει ο Systematic, εκτός των Channel One θα εμφανιστεί και ο Liam Partial, ο ιδιοκτήτης της Λονδρέζικης Partial Records, ενός από των πιο δραστήριων label στο χώρο της UΚ Dub. Ο Liam είναι υπεύθυνος για την κυκλοφορία πολλών νέων παραγωγών αλλά και την επανακυκλοφόρηση παλαιότερων, σπάνιων ̓διαμαντιών ̓ του είδους, τα οποία είχαν μεγάλη απήχηση στη Sound System σκηνή της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας τη δεκαετία του ‘90.

H Partial έχει κυκλοφορήσει περισσότερα από 80 βινύλια από την ίδρυσή της, το 2013. Ο Liam υπήρξε ενεργό μέλος της Βρετανικής Reggae Sound System σκηνής από τις αρχές του ‘90 και η δισκοθήκη του είναι γεμάτη από σπάνια βινύλια τζαμαϊκανής Roots/Reggae και εκρηκτικά UΚ Dubs που δοκιμάζουν τα ηχεία οποιουδήποτε ηχοσυστήματος. Στο Dj  set του θα ακουστεί ό,τι καλύτερο σε vintage roots, σύγχρονα dubs και αποκλειστικότητες από τους κορυφαίους παραγωγούς του σήμερα.

Το μοναδικό line-up συμπληρώνει ο Olli Dublifter, που κάνει το αθηναϊκό ντεμπούτο του αντιπροσωπεύοντας τη Φινλανδική Intergalaktik Records, η οποία από το 2007 κυκλοφορεί μία σειρά από βινύλια με digital Roots χαρακτήρα, από τοπικούς και όχι μόνο μουσικούς παραγωγούς. Ιδρυτικό μέλος του Intergalaktik Sound System, είναι έμπειρος operator και στα Dj set του επιλέγει ανεβαστικά Roots, Dub, πολλά ακυκλοφόρητα dubplates καθώς και φρέσκες digital παραγωγές.

Φυσικά από την βραδιά δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει ο Systematic, ο άνθρωπος πίσω από το πανέμορφο και πανίσχυρο Origins. Ο Systematic γνώρισε από κοντά την Sound System Culture στην Μεγάλη Βρετανία όπου και ζούσε για περισσότερο από μια δεκαετία.

Με την επιστροφή του στην Αθήνα το 2015, κατασκεύασε το Origins Sound System, ένα 100% χειροποίητο ηχοσύστημα. Σαν selector είναι επηρεασμένος από τη Βρετανική σκηνή της UΚ Dub και την αυθεντική Roots/Reggae της δεκαετίας του ‘70.

Στο πλευρό του Systematic αλλά και καθ’όλη την βραδιά θα βρίσκεται και ο MC Astronatty,  ο οποίος έχει μοιραστεί τα decks και τα μικρόφωνα σε φεστιβάλ και μουσικές σκηνές με εγχώρια και όχι μόνο ονόματα της reggae και έχει συμμετάσχει στη δημιουργία του ιντερνετικού reggae ραδιοφώνου Cyprus Dub Community.

Πραγματικά το 9ο Sound System Culture δεν έχει να ζηλέψει απολύτως τίποτα από τα αντίστοιχα dances του εξωτερικού με προϊστορία πολλών ετών. Τα τρία ονόματα σταθμός στην ευρωπαϊκή sound system σκηνή σε συνδυασμό με το χειροποίητο ηχοσύστημα Οrigins τα selections του Systematic και τα φωνητικά του MC Astronatty, συνθέτουν μια ανεπανάληπτη ευκαιρία να ζήσετε ένα εκρηκτικό σαββατόβραδο.

Mikey Dread and Ras Kayleb of Channel One Sound System, one of the greatest Reggae Sound Systems in the world, return to Greece for a powerful dance, ready to  make the people jump and dance to their inspired selections, endless energy and one-of-a-kind performance.

Alongside Channel One will be Liam Partial, selector, producer and owner of Partial Records, as well as Olli Dublifter from Helsinki Finland, selector of Intergalaktik Sound System and co-owner of Ιntergalaktik Sound Label. The line up doesn’t stop here, Systematic, owner, selector and builder of Origins Sound System will be providing sweet dub music and MC Astronatty will be hosting the night providing irie chantings.

Origins Sound System is one of the most active sound systems in Athens, loyal to their passion for authentic Roots Reggae music, they continue their successful series of events promoting sound system culture in the best possible way. As we described in the 7th edition of the event series, Systematic has built a powerful sound system capable to support even the toughest artists and sounds in the scene. Proof is the invitation of Channel One Sound System, one of the toughest sounds in the world.

It is extremely difficult to summarize the history of Channel One Sound System in a few words. With a 40-year experience in their back, endless hours of selecting and promoting Jah music, their performance is a music experience which the fans of the scene must experience. Their name is a homage to the “Channel One” Jamaican record label , which was their main influence in the start of their career. The philosophy behind Mikey Dread’s and Ras Kayleb’s work is that reggae is a medium bringing people closer, which they spread across Jamaica with a tour to universities and social clubs promoting reggae music to the youth.

In 2009 they took park in Dub to Dubstep Tour and in 2011 in Dub to Jungle Tour, where they performed in front of thousands of people. They have toured almost in every corner of the globe, from Europe to Australia, to New Zealand Israel, USA , India and Japan. In addition they have a regular booth in Notting Hill’s Carnival in the last 30 years.

In their impressive career they also have countless sound clashes with the biggest and toughest sound systems. In 2010 they won the Red Bull Sound Clash where they competed against Metalheads, Skream, Benga and Souljazz. Their sound system is maybe the most recognizable in the scene, bringing crisp sound full of bass to each dance, while their selections set the standards for the rest of the scene with rare vinyls and unreleased killer dubplates making the crowd go wild each and every time.

In Systematic’s mini festival apart from Channel One, Partial Records owner Liam Partial will also provide the night’s vibes. Liam is responsible for a plethora of releases from new producers as well as re issues of older rare diamonds which had a great impact on UK’s sound system scene in the 90s.

Partial have released more than 80 vinyls since its creation back in 2013. Liam was an active member of the British Reggae Sound System scene since the 90s.  His vinyl collection is full of rare Jamaican Roots Reggae tunes as well as explosive UK Dub ones, ready to test every sound system. In his Dj set we will hear the best vintage roots tunes but also modern dubs and unreleased material from top producers.

The amazing line-up continues with Olli Dublifter, who will play for the first time in Athens representing Finnish label Intergalaktik Records. Since 2007 Intergalaktik has released a series of records, mainly in a digital roots style from local scandinavian producers. Founding member of the Intergalaktik Sound System, Olli is a skillful operator. Expect to hear uplifting Roots, Dub and many fresh unreleased digital productions.

Last but not least, Systematic couldn’t be absent from this impressive line up. The man behind beautiful Origins Sound System, Systematic, lived for more than ten years in the heart of UK sound system culture. Upon his return in Athens in 2015, he built the Origins Soundsystem in order to promote the culture he experienced in the UK. His selections are well influenced by his stay in the UK, with UK Dub and Roots being his prime weapons.

Alongside Systematic and during the whole dance, MC Astronatty will be hosting with his irie chants. Astronatty has participated in many festivals and events sharing the decks and mic with local and international reggae artists. He has also helped in the creation of reggae radio Cyprus Dub Community.

The 9th edition of Sound System culture, is putting Athens in the global Sound System map with top-a-top artists and selectors. It’s a dance that no one that takes Dub music seriously should miss. Channel One, Partial Records, Intergalaktik Sound, Systematic and MC Astronatty are promising an explosive never before dance.
