Deadly Dance featuring Brother Culture

Brother Culture is a versatile and dynamic veteran of the scene in UK and has recorded literally hundreds of tracks. He is so busy. We recorded this quite a few years ago in my bedroom cupboard, and my instrumental never really stood up to his vocal power until I applied some real effort into complimenting his gruff style. It’s like Mafia vampires gone dubwise.

Ο Brother Culture είναι ένας ξεχωριστός και δυναμικός βετεράνος της βρετανικής reggae σκηνής, που έχει ηχογραφήσει κυριολεκτικά εκατοντάδες κομμάτια. Είναι πολύ δραστήριος και πολυάσχολος. Ηχογραφήσαμε αυτό το κομμάτι πριν αρκετά χρόνια στο δωμάτιό μου και το instrumental μου δεν μπορούσε ποτέ να αντέξει την δύναμη της φωνής του, μέχρι που εφήρμοσα κάποια άλλα μέσα για να γλυκάνω το τραχύ του στυλ. Ήταν σαν Mafia Vampires σε Dubwise εκδοχή.

Baby Fan Ying featuring Mouse FX

The actual title is Bei Dei Fan Ying, the working title stuck with me as it was easy to remember. MouseFX is a lovely MC from Hong Kong, who is here asking why sometimes he can’t feel a connection in society today, and just says “give me a sign/ show me a signal”, let’s feel some compassion!

Ο πραγματικός τίτλος του είναι Bei Dei Fan Ying, ο τρέχον τίτλος χρησιμοποιήθηκε για να είναι εύκολο να τον θυμάμαι. Ο MouseFX είναι ένας θαυμάσιος MC από τo Hong Kong, που εδώ ρωτάει γιατί μερικές φορές δεν μπορεί να νιώσει κάποια σύνδεση με την κοινωνία τις μέρες αυτές και λέει “δώσε μου ένα σημάδι/ δείξε μου ένα σήμα”, ας νιώσουμε λίγο συμπόνια λοιπόν!

Bad Boy Stepping featuring Ranking Joe

Probably one of the first 12″ vinyl I had in my reggae collection was The Hotter Claps Clap Τhem by Ranking Joe & the Steppers (with The Revolutionaries on riddim) on Greensleeves. The pressing of the record was superb and Joe drops in after about 2 minutes in his inimitable reserved rolling style. It’s kind of a teenage ambition fulfilled to have him appear here. He was recorded in New york, and we spoke quite a few times about the direction of the track, which was originally going to be about underwater fish and octopus bad boys! Trumpeter Alex came around in Berlin and I rented a lovely vintage French ribbon microphone to record him with. After chopping up the horn for hours to create the melodies, I sent it to Gareth in Wellington, New Zealand to double up and add his own take to the track (his band ‘Newtown Rocksteady’ are on point). Result.

Ίσως ένα από τα πρώτα 12ιντσα βινύλια reggae που είχα στην συλλογή μου ήταν το The Hotter Claps Clap Τhem των Ranking Joe & The Steppers (το riddim ήταν των The Revolutionaries) που είχε κυκλοφορήσει από την Greensleeves. Η ηχογράφηση ήταν υπέροχη και ο Joe μπαίνει για 2 λεπτά με το αμίμητο και μοναδικό στυλ του. Είναι σαν να πραγματοποιώ μια εφηβική φιλοδοξία το να τον έχω εδώ. Ηχογραφήθηκε στην Νέα Υόρκη και μιλήσαμε αρκετές φορές για την κατεύθυνση του κομματιού, η οποία σίγουρα φαίνονταν ότι θα…! Ο τρομπετίστας Alex ήρθε στο Βερολίνο και νοίκιασα ένα θαυμάσιο vintage μικρόφωνο για να ηχογραφήσουμε μαζί. Αφού ‘’κόβαμε’’ δείγματα από την τρομπέτα για ώρες, για να δημιουργήσουμε μελωδίες, τα έστειλα στον Gareth στο Wellington στην Νέα Ζηλανδία για να τα διπλασιάσουμε και να προσθέσουμε την δικιά του πινελιά στο κομμάτι. (Η μπάντα του ‘’Newtown Rocksteady’’…) Το αποτέλεσμα είναι αυτό!

Real Apache Style featuring Tomawok

Very kindly, gypsy music legends, Mahala Rai Banda let me use the sample from Balkan Reggae that I remixed for them after rising French reggae star, Tomawok, got in touch and asked he could write some multi-lingual verses for the instrumental version. I decided to expand and toughen it up to another level. The bubbling middle drop was something Andy J Jones and I came up with on the day of the mix.

Οι θρύλοι της gypsy music Mahala Rai Banda, πολύ ευγενικά με άφησαν να χρησιμοποιήσω το sample από το remix που είχα κάνει για αυτούς στο Balkan Reggae και μετά ήρθα σε επαφή με τον ανερχόμενο Γάλλο reggae star Tomawok και τον ρώτησα αν θα μπορούσε να γράψει κάποιες versions σε διάφορες γλώσσες για την instrumental εκδοχή. Σκέφτηκα να το επεκτείνω και να το σκληρύνω, για να το πάω σε άλλο επίπεδο.

Stand To Order featuring Soom T

A defiant but sunny strong stand against being told to lie down and accept what we are being offered in life! Recorded on the bonny banks of Loch Lomond at Soom T’s old retreat. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Soom as her DJ for a number of years, and her talent simply can’t be summed up. Τhis is just a snippet of her rapid delivery and ear for a good melody. The bridge/hook came out of messing with some adlibs; just too many good ideas!

Μια προκλητική αλλά χαρούμενη δυνατή στάση ενάντια στο να επαναπαυθείς και να αποδεχθείς τι σου προσφέρουν στην ζωή! Ηχογραφήθηκε στο παλιό ησυχαστήριο της Soom T. Είχα την χαρά να δουλέψω με την Soom T σαν dj της για κάποια χρόνια και το ταλέντο της απλά δεν μπορεί να συγκριθεί. Αυτό είναι μόνο ένα απόσπασμα από την άμεση συνεισφορά της και μια καλή μελωδία. Η γέφυρα ήρθε έπειτα από τις δοκιμές.

My Truth featuring Micala

A song about finding that right person, who touches all your right buttons, and is just as freaky as you are. An amazing singer from Copenhagen, this was a remix I did for Micala (who also works with Stine Kinck who appears on Liar Liar), and decided to go back and re-record and mix it a much higher level for the album. You can hear why. What a corker that taps back into that hot UK 1980’s lovers roots feel.

Ένα τραγούδι που μιλά για το πως μπορείς να βρεις το κατάλληλο άτομο που αγγίζει όλα τα σωστά κουμπιά σου και είναι τόσο παράξενος όσο και εσύ. Μια απίστευτη τραγουδίστρια από την Κοπεγχάγη, η Micala, στην οποία αφιέρωσα το συγκεκριμένο remix που έκανα και σκέφτηκα να γυρίσω πίσω και να το ηχογραφήσω ξανά, να το μιξάρω σε ένα πολύ υψηλότερο επίπεδο και να μπει στο άλμπουμ. Μπορείτε να ακούσετε γιατί. Πόσο τέλειο, που σου μεταφέρει αυτήν την 80’s UK roots αίσθηση.

Moving On featuring Jackie Venson & Spikey T

Jackie Venson is a multi talented blues woman with Afro American and German heritage, who has such a way of making a crowd smile and get right on board with her bluesy guitar looping, it’s infectious. This track hardly scratches the surface of her skills and was rushed off during a brief stop in Berlin, when I happened to catch Spikey T at the same time. I imagined a cheesy video where they both sing this on a cliff top in white suits, probably with hairspray and shoulder pads. It’s like if Sly and Robbie had controlled the Top 10 pop charts in 1988

I’d say that I’ve been a massive Aswad fan for years, and the Live and Direct album from Notting Hill Carnival in 1983 has a magical electricity to it. The original Jstar instrumental backing had no relation to their mighty African Children until Spikey T was humming it over my riddim, while staying at my flat, and we re-jigged one chord to make it fit. An honour to cover a great band. Spikey T is one of the most unsung talents of the MC and singing scene (and an awesome DJ) – we met many years ago at Morcheeba’s studio… too many stories!

All I have featuring Blackout JA

Jamaica/Bristol’s Blackout JA has recorded with some superb international reggae artists, and he turned in this righteous rough, but sweet, request to look for love in our hearts. Thanks Blackout!

Ο Blackout JA (Bristol/Jamaica) έχει ηχογραφήσει με μερικούς υπέροχους διεθνείς reggae καλλιτέχνες, και σ’ αυτό που του ζητήθηκε σκληρή -αλλά γλυκιά- παράκληση να ψάξει για την αγάπη στις καρδιές μας. Σε ευχαριστώ Blackout!
